Australia and Canada temporarily halt funding to UNRWA over Hamas allegations – Latest News

Government Australia and You have have temporarily halted their funding to UN bodies for Palestinian refugees, UNRWA. This was done after Israel accused several UNRWA employees of being involved in the attack Hamas on October 7.

Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong said on Saturday (27/1) that she was “very concerned” by the allegations against UNRWA.

“We are talking to partners and will temporarily suspend recent disbursement of funds,” Wong wrote on social media platform X, as reported by the news agency AFPSaturday (27/1/2024).

“We welcome UNRWA’s swift response, including terminating the contract and launching an investigation, as well as the recent announcement of a full investigation into the allegations against the organization,” he added.

Canadian International Development Minister Ahmed Hussen on Friday (26/1) local time, also announced that Ottawa was “temporarily suspending additional funding for UNRWA while the country conducts a thorough investigation into these allegations”.

“Canada takes this report very seriously and is in close contact with UNRWA and other donors on this issue,” he wrote in X.

“If these allegations are proven accurate, Canada expects UNRWA to take immediate action against those suspected of involvement in Hamas attacks,” he added.
