In front of nearly 76,000 people, Australia beat Denmark 2-0 and qualified for the quarterfinals of the Women’s World Cup. Foord and Raso scored for the hosts at the packed Accor Stadium, which also saw Sam Kerr take the field for the first time in this World Cup.
Sam Kerr finally debuted in the Australian Cup. The main player of the host team went to the field in the 33rd minute of the second half, but had a discreet performance.
The match was attended by 75,784 people, equaling the best audience in this edition of the World Cup. The debut of the Australian selection, against Ireland, had exactly the same audience.
This is the fourth time Australia has reached the quarterfinals at a Women’s Cup. The team, however, never got past this stage of the World Cup.
Classified, Australia awaits the game between France and Morocco to meet the opponent of the quarterfinals. The Matildas return to the field on Saturday (12), at 4 am (Brasília time)
How was the game
Torcida pushed Australia, and Denmark stopped at Arnold. In front of their fans, the Australians started the game with more ball possession, but little bothering the opposing defense. On the other hand, the Danes made a safe start to the first half, with space to reach the opponent’s field and test goalkeeper Arnold.
Manual counter-coup, and goal for Australia. Despite the superiority of Denmark, who came out ahead were the hosts who, with the first shot in the direction of the goal, made the Accor Stadium explode.
Denmark went up, and stopped at the yellow wall. Behind on the scoreboard, the Danes stayed with the ball more, exchanging passes freely — even in the middle — and struggling to get past a compact Australia and finish against Arnold’s goal.
Australia managed the Danish pressure, extended and finally saw the debut of Sam Kerr. With the advantage, Matildas managed to hold back Denmark’s attacks and found spaces, especially on the left, to create and expand the scoreboard. In addition, in the 33rd minute of the second half, star Sam Kerr entered the field for the first time in this World Cup.
Goals and key shots
Got Arnold. In the 16th minute of the first half, Harder received Holmgaard on the counterattack, swung at Hunt and placed a shot to Arnold’s defense.
Australia goal. In the 28th minute of the first half, Fowler still cleared in his field and launched for Foord, who received it in speed, invaded the area and finished between Christensen’s legs.
He took Christensen. At 19 minutes of the second half, Foord received from Gorry on the left side, took it to the back and crossed. Van Egmond dodged the letter, but caught it weakly, and Christensen defended.
Mais um das Matildas. In the 24th minute of the second half, Fowler received it from Cooney-Cross at the edge of the area, cleared it and kicked it across. Van Egmond dominated with his back to the goal and arranged for Raso to leave hers.
