Auston Matthews Makes NHL History with 50th Goal in Record Time

Watch Auston Matthews reach the historic milestone in the player above.

After the first period, Matthews, who went 4-2 for his 51st goal, was asked what his record means to young players in Arizona. Matthews grew up in Scottsdale five miles from the arena and was an Arizona fan growing up.

– I hope that it is something that they can take and perhaps be inspired by, encouraged by. It doesn’t matter where you come from if you dream hard enough, work hard enough, you can make those dreams come true, says Matthews according to the NHL. The match ended at 06:43 Swedish time.

Following Lemieux and Gretzky

The last time any player reached 50 goals faster was when Mario Lemieux did it in 1995-96 after 50 games. The record is of course held by Wayne Gretzky who reached 50 goals in 39 games while playing for Edmonton in 1981-82 on his way to a record 92 goals that season.

Matthews has scored nine goals in his last four games after, among other things, a double hat-trick.

William Nylander scored two goals in the match and is the best Swedish scorer in the NHL with 31 complete hits and leads the Swedish scoring league.
