Jakarta –
Australia has experienced the deadliest day of the COVID-19 pandemic. This situation occurred because the Omicron variant spread rapidly and made hospitalization rates soar to a record.
Reported Reuters, Australia facing the worst of the Corona epidemic. A total of 77 deaths from Corona were reported in a day from three of Australia’s most populous states, namely New South Wales, Victoria and Queensland on Tuesday (18/1) local time.
“We have seen and we will continue to see deaths, mostly in the elderly, mostly in people with other chronic diseases,” Chief Health Officer Paul Kelly told Australian Broadcasting Corporation, reported by Reuters and Channel News Asia, Wednesday (19/1/2022).
Kelly said this yesterday. He reminded the public to prepare for more deaths from COVID-19 over the next few weeks.
As a result of this situation, the state of Victoria raised its state of emergency for hospitals to ‘code brown’. The code is usually applied to natural disasters or mass casualty events.
Kelly said the country’s hospital capacity was facing an increase in patient admissions. The death toll surpassed the previous record high, when 57 cases in a day last Thursday (13/1).
