Yankees reported that Brad Ausmus will become manager Aaron Boone’s third bench coach, who started with Josh Bard in 2018-19 and continued with Carlos Mendoza
NEW YORK — The New York Yankees hired Brad Ausmus on Tuesday to replace Carlos Mendoza as manager Aaron Boone’s bench coach.
Ausmus led the Detroit Tigers from 2014 to 17 and the Los Angeles Angels in 2019. He won the American League Central Division in his first season, going 90-72.
Then, the Baltimore Orioles swept the Tigers in a division series.
Ausmus, now 54, spent 2022 as the bench coach of the Oakland Athletics, under manager Bob Melvin.
Mendoza had been the Yankees’ bench coach for four seasons. The Venezuelan left on November 13 to lead the New York Mets in the same city.
The Yankees said Tuesday that Ausmus will become Boone’s third bench coach, who started under Josh Bard in 2018-19.
New York went 82-80 this season. They missed the playoffs for the first time since 2016.
Ausmus began his professional career with the Yankees organization after New York selected him in the 48th round of the 1987 amateur draft. He was traded to the San Diego Padres and made his major league debut on July 28, 1993.
He hit .251 with 80 homers and 607 RBIs in 18 seasons for the Padres (1993-96), Detroit (1996-1999-2000) and Houston Astros (1997-98, 2001-08).
As a manager, he has a record of 386-422.
