Auroras and space collisions. These are the best astronomy pictures of 2022

The beauties of the aurora borealis, mysterious nebulae in deep space and unusual views of the surface of the Sun and the Moon. All this brings the best astronomical images of the year, which advanced to the finals of the international Astronomy Photographer of the Year 2022 competition, organized by the British Royal Observatory in Greenwich. You can view the nominated shots in the photo gallery.

This year, the competition jury evaluated over three thousand pictures from amateur and professional photographers from sixty-seven countries around the world. Among the works of the finalists, we can find, for example, a shot of a huge full moon looming behind the tower in Glastonbury, England, or a view of the glowing Milky Way above the world’s highest highway. The jury was also very interested in one of the most detailed amateur photographic maps of the South Pole of the Moon or images of Comet Leonard, discovered in January 2021.

The Astronomy Photogapher of the Year competition entered its fourteenth year this year, and its jury is traditionally made up of experts from the world of art and astronomy. The winners of the nine competition categories, two special awards and the overall winner will be announced during an online ceremony on Thursday 15 September.

The winning images will then be exhibited in the British National Maritime Museum from Saturday 17 September. The works of the winners and finalists will also be published in a book.
