Aurora from Space: NASA Astronaut’s Stunning Images Make Northern Light Hunters Jealous

SPACE — Fresh images of the aurora from NASA astronauts are making northern light hunters jealous. Earlier this month, International Space Station (ISS) astronaut Jasmin Moghbeli took a truly stunning image of a flag-like green aurora.

Unbelievably, Moghbeli was stunned to see the colorful light that stretched from the southern region of the Earth to outer space. From his side, he felt that the Earth was being embraced by beauty.

“The aurora from up here is truly spectacular,” said Moghbeli during an ISS press conference on science on Wednesday, February 21, 2024.

The green aurora that Moghbeli saw on February 15 was one of his missions in space. He saw some green, some red that swept across the surface of the earth.

Auroras, like ribbons, occur on Earth when our sun sends energetic particles into the Earth’s upper atmosphere. Earth’s protective magnetic field in turn directs these particles toward the poles. These solar particles glow colorfully when they interact with our atmosphere.

This time, astronauts on the ISS were able to witness a very spectacular aurora because the sun was approaching solar maximum, which is the 11-year cycle of peak solar activity. The more flares and coronal mass particle ejections from the sun, the more auroras visible on Earth.

“I love it, because every time I look out the window, I feel amazed. Each time, it feels a little different, even if we pass through the same part of the earth. “Whether the lights are different, or the clouds or the season or the angle of the sun, every moment I am amazed at how alive and beautiful our planet is,” said Moghbeli.
