Aung San Suu Kyi Pardoned: Update on Myanmar’s Former Leader Under Military Junta

Aung San Suu Kyi, who has been in prison since she was overthrown in a military coup in 2021, has been pardoned by the country’s military junta, according to state media.

Suu Kyi is one of over 7,000 prisoners pardoned by the military junta to mark Buddhist Lent.

The deposed leader has been convicted of a number of offenses related to alleged sedition, electoral fraud and corruption since 2021.

Still under house arrest

Myanmar’s former leader Aung San Suu Kyi will be pardoned for five of the many offenses for which she was jailed for a total of 33 years, according to state media.

According to the AFP news agency, she still faces 14 other offences.

The Nobel Prize winner was moved from prison to house arrest last week, writes Reuters.

Myanmar Radio and Television reported the pardons on Tuesday, but a source told Reuters she would remain in custody.

She will not be released from house arrest, says the source, who did not want to be identified.

Peace Prize Winner

Suu Kyi was head of government in Myanmar from 2016, but was arrested during the coup against her democratically elected government in February 2021. She has been in prison in the capital Naypyidaw since then.

In 1991 Suu Kyi received the Nobel Peace Prize for her work for democracy and human rights in Myanmar.

The 78-year-old was also under house arrest for almost 15 years in the period 1989 to 2010.

She helped found the party National League for Democracy (NLD) in 1988. This led to her being placed under house arrest by the military junta in the country.
