An ultra-efficient iPhone charger from Aukey

The years go by, and despite the fact that the iPhones are becoming more and more powerful and compatible with fast charging, Apple has always offered a 5W charger in the box that takes hours to charge your smartphone (except the iPhone 11 Pro which was entitled to a 20 W charger). Partly for the environment, since this year, the brand has decided to permanently remove chargers when buying iPhone. that’s why Aukey offers you the charger 18W Power Delivery sold with the USB-C to Lightning cable priced at 19.99€. Let’s take a look at the characteristics …

What’s in the box

Inside this small cardboard box, we find the famous fast charger with also the USB-C to Lightning cable that we must notify because most chargers with the same characteristics are sold without. As always, the instructions are there even if it should not be used by many people, but you never know for the most amateurs.

Fast and without overheating

This small, very compact black block which does not even weigh 50 grams has been designed so that you can plug it into any socket or multiple socket. Understand that other chargers on the market (even 18W) cannot be plugged in everywhere due to their too large size.

Once the charger is plugged into the socket and the iPhone at 1% battery connected via the cable, it’s time for efficiency. As you can see in the photos below, the iPhone that was used for the test went from 1% to 56% in only 30 minutes. It is important to remember that Apple’s initial charger takes around 1h20 to achieve this result. The second step concerns the 80%. This figure is important because a lot of people believe that their iPhone is 80% charged enough, but above all, this is where the iPhone stops according to your habits thanks to Apple’s optimized charging. The capture shows that it took 1h exactly to reach 80%.

As you know with the optimized load of iOS, the last part, the last 20% is always slower. You’ll need 57 additional minutes if you want to reach 100%.

  • 0 to 56% in 30 minutes
  • 0 to 80% in 1 hour
  • 0 to 100% in 1h and 57 min

The last point is just as important and it concerns the iPhone overheating while charging. Having done the test several times, the iPhone does not heat up at all if you do not use it. On the other hand, a very slight but logical overheating appears if you are for example on YouTube at the same time, really nothing unusual.

Our opinion on the Aukey charger

This Power Delivery 18W d’Aukey is aptly named. Its power is there and allows to bring more than honorable capacities to the recharging of a recent iPhone (iPhone X and higher). The fact that it is not too powerful avoids permanent overheating and a battery that wears out in a few months.

The supplied USB-C to Lightning cable makes it a complete and competitive offer on the market. Its price of 19.99€ speaks for itself. Finally, its black lacquered color gives it a go-anywhere and modern style.

On the negative side or to improve, it lacks 2W to reach full power like that of ESR or Apple. And one could even imagine a block a little more compact still.
