August 2023 Weather Forecast: Hot and Rainy Summer Continues

Almost two-thirds of the summer of 2023 is behind us, the last month is left – August. In July, the day has already become an hour shorter, in August it will decrease by another 1.5 hours, or the national average to 13.5 hours. In the old days, they said about this: “Peter and Paul (among Orthodox Christians the day of these saints is celebrated on July 12) the day was reduced by an hour, and Elijah the prophet (August 2) pulled for an hour and a half.”

What will the weather be like in August this year, the site TSN.ua found out.

We traditionally compared the long-term forecast of Ukrhydrometcenter and the generalized forecast of two popular weather sites: meteofor (former gismeteo) and sinoptik.

Ukrhydrometeorological center: August is like July

According to the long-term forecast of Ukrhydrometcenter, This August is predicted to be as hot and rainy as July. The average monthly temperature is 20-25 degrees Celsius, in the Carpathians16-18 degrees, which is 1.5-2 degrees higher than normal. However, the average values for the month will not reflect the full picture: towards the end of August it will be noticeably colder than July, but its first half will be hotter, especially on sunny days.

As Vladislav Bilyk, head of the meteorological forecasting department, said, this August is expected to be similar to July, especially at the beginning.

“There will be unstable weather, temperature swings, two or three days of fairly warm weather, then rains, cold for a day or two, then warming again,” says Vladislav Bilyk. “The month will not be dry, like, for example, last June, rains forecasted within normal limits.Weather disasters will be, without them it is impossible in summer, these are typical phenomena for our latitudes, but it is more correct to call them difficult weather conditions, these are storms, squalls, hail, showers.Maximum for three days, but what difficult weather conditions in August must be expected everywhere, of course.

The highest air temperature in August is 42 degrees Celsius. It was previously observed in all regions, except for the western (with the exception of the Ternopil region) and northern (except for the Chernihiv region). This year, the likelihood of such extreme heat is also significant.

The lowest temperature in August is 2 degrees below zero. It is recorded in the Carpathians, northern, eastern, Volyn and Zaporozhye regions. But in other areas, except for the central and southern ones, frosts are possible at the end of the month.

According to the Ukrhydrometcenter, Falls in August will fall 31-73 mm, in the Carpathians 90-112 mm, or 80-100% of the norm. This is the same as in July. But by regions, the amount of precipitation will be different: in the Kherson region and in the west of Crimea – only 24-28 mm, in the Carpathians in some places more than 120 mm, or five times more.

Weather websites: Summer is enough for everyone

According to the generalized forecast of weather sites, August will start differently in different regions of the country: if, for example, in the west it will rain for a week and it will be cool, then in the east and south at this time dry hot weather is expected. Subsequently, it will get warmer everywhere and for almost the entire month it will be hot, and periodic rains will be fleeting and warm.

West

In the first week of August, residents of western Ukraine – these are Transcarpathian, Lviv, Ivano-Frankivsk, Ternopil, Chernivtsi and Khmelnytsky regions – it is better not to leave the house without umbrellas. A On August 6, a “rain apocalypse” and a cold snap from 23-25 to 16-18 degrees are generally expected. Summer warmth will return to the region on August 8-9, the temperature will rise to 25-29 degrees during the day.

Another cold snap to +20-22 degrees with light precipitation and “rain apocalypse-2” is predicted in the west during the period from 16 to 20 August. Further, the “temperature swing” will go up again, and the sky will become cloudless. August will end not like summer, on the 31st the weather is already expected in autumn – it will rain and get colder to +20 degrees.

North

In the north of Ukraine, August will start differently: in Volhynia and Rivne region, the first five days will be sunny and warm, and showers with thunderstorms and even hail are expected here only on August 6-7. In the Sumy region, on the contrary, it will rain and thunder for the first three days, then hot and dry weather will come for two weeks with temperatures up to +30 degrees and above.

And the Zhytomyr, Chernihiv and Kiev regions geographically located between them will take place with a “light fright”: rains will be almost the entire first week, but short-term, and the air temperature is comfortable, 23-26 degrees Celsius. In the middle and almost until the end of the month, the weather is predicted to be variegated: sometimes rain, sometimes sunshine, but warm.

The daily temperature will be within +24-29 degrees, only on August 20 Chernihiv and Kiev regions will be covered by a short-term cyclone from the north, which will bring showers and a drop in temperature to +16-18 degrees. On the last day of August, autumn will come to the northern regions: rain and +20.

Center

In the center of the country – Vinnitsa, Cherkasy, Dnepropetrovsk, Kirovograd, Poltava, regions – August is expected to be dry and hot. A little more precipitation will fall in Vinnitsa and Cherkasy regions, especially at the beginning of the month. However, in the future, Internet weather forecasters see only rare short-term rains and daytime temperatures from 24 to 30 degrees Celsius.

The hottest and driest will be in the Dnepropetrovsk region, here daytime temperatures will often reach + 33-34 degrees. By the way, the day of August 31 in the central regions is expected to be elderly, not autumn.

East

In the three eastern regions – Kharkiv, Donetsk and Lugansk – it will be very hot for most of the month. And this is with almost no precipitation. Rains will moisten the earth only in the first days of August and in some places will fall from the 15th to the 20th. They will bring with them comfortable +25-26 degrees, but not for long. On other days, the air temperature will stay +30 degrees during the day, and in the Lugansk region in the first week of August it can even be +35 and above.

In the Lugansk region in the first week of August it can even be 35 and above.

It will become a little cooler in the second half of August only in the Kharkiv region, that is, not +30, but only “+24-25”. Summer will say “goodbye” according to the calendar, August 31st.

South

In the south of Ukraine – Odessa, Nikolaev, Kherson, Zaporozhye regions and Crimea – almost the whole of August is predicted to be warm and dry. Odessans, given the proximity of the Black Sea, will be the most comfortable: the sea breeze will not allow the sun to warm the air above +30. Four more periods of warm short rains are predicted: 1-2, 12-13, 16-17 and 20-21 August, which, however, will not be able to significantly reduce the temperature.

But residents of three other regions and Crimea will need umbrellas only for protection from the sun, but on most days it will be + 30-34 in the shade. Summer will leave the region according to the calendar plus one day: not August 31, but September 1.

As you can see, the forecasts of the Ukrhydrometcenter and weather sites differ little. Forecasters promise Ukrainians a hot, thunderous August with precipitation within normal limits. Internet calculations predict warm weather in the west and north of the country and heat in other regions.

With rains, the opposite is true: in the southern and eastern regions it is dry, in the western regions it is wetter than we would like.

Recall that earlier Ukrainian weather forecaster Igor Kibalchich predicted what the weather would be like in Ukraine until the end of July.
