In 2024, the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, which we celebrate every year on August 15, will fall on a Thursday. This will give us possibility of taking advantage of the long August weekend. All we need to do is take one day off on Friday, August 15, and we will gain a 4-day long weekend. But what about the Thursday holiday? Will it reduce working hours and thus allow employees to take an additional day off?

Holiday August 15th. Will we get an extra day off?
There are doubts about this, Is an employee entitled to an additional day off from work for the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary? Unfortunately, we don’t have good news. The right to take an additional day off, in accordance with the provisions of the Labor Code (Article 130 § 2 of the Labor Code), only for a holiday falling on a Saturday. Since August 15 falls on a Thursday this year, employees will not gain an additional day off from work.
Additional time off for a public holiday on Saturday only in 2025
The nearest holiday falling on Saturday is May 3, 2025 – National Independence Day. Since, according to the Labor Code, it falls on a Saturday, the employee can easily take an additional day off from work for it. The year 2025 will be special because of the public holidays falling on Saturday. Next year, employees will gain two additional days off, due to two public holidays falling on Saturday. How many working days in August 2024?
According to the 2024 calendar, employees will work 168 hours over 21 days in August. This is a comparable number of working hours to July.

When is the long weekend?
Employees who wish to take advantage of the next long weekend will have to wait until November. Then, due to the holiday on November 1 in 2024, they will gain a 3-day, extended weekend on Friday.
The next chance for a long weekend will be in December. By using 3 days of leave on 23, 24 and 27 December, employees have as many as 9 days off.
