Augsburg Panthers: Damper for the play-off hopes: AEV is defeated in Cologne

One day after the success in Krefeld, the Augsburg Panthers lose 1: 2 against the Kölner Haien. Nevertheless, the battle for the play-off places has not yet been decided.

The second 24-hour double pack of the Augsburg panther in the end of the season took over public holidays a similar course to the first. Tray Tuomie’s team started it last Tuesday with a 4-1 win in Wolfsburg and ended the day after with an 8-1 debacle in Bremerhaven. This time, too, the start was successful, on Easter Sunday the Panthers won 3-0 in Krefeld – goal scorers were Jaroslav Hafenrichter, Brad McClure and Thomas J. Trevelyan. The guest performance in Cologne followed on Easter Monday. After all, things were much tighter there than in Bremerhaven. The guests lost 1: 2 (0: 1, 0: 0, 1: 1).

It was clear to the Augsburgers, especially at the beginning, that they had been on the ice less than 24 hours before. Cologne tried to use this and pushed for the leadership with great running effort. The gate frame and Markus Keller (both several times) had something against it – until James Sheppard started the solo and scored 1-0 (16.).

AEV comes into the game better in the second third

After the first change of sides, the game flattened noticeably. This was mainly due to the fact that the Panthers were now better able to nip the Cologne offensive efforts in the bud. What was missing, however, were their own chances to score. The second third passed without a hit. His team was only centimeters away from equalization Augsburg Playmaker Drew LeBlanc in the second break at the microphone of Magenta Sports. And on the subject of fatigue: “I can’t speak for the other guys, but I feel good. I hope everyone feels that way. ”Not surprising that the model professional from the USA says that, because he has been considered the fittest professional in the Augsburg squad for years.

In fact, LeBlanc and his colleagues came out of the cabin full of verve and started well into the last third. They did not want to succeed in just one hit. Justin Pogge in the gate of the sharks now ran to operating temperature. And right in the middle of the best phase of the Panthers, the 0: 2 (48th) fell. Marcel Müller had deflected untenable. With the final siren Scott Valentine only shortened to 1: 2 final score.

Play-off chances of the Augsburg Panthers are still intact

Despite the defeat: In the struggle for a play-off spot, Schwenningen (4th / 43rd points), Straubing (5th / 41st) and Augsburg (6th / 41st) came close together. The two Bavarian teams want to go where the Black Forest (still) is. Because that’s where the play-off zone begins. At the moment, however, the table is not entirely meaningful. Reason: The team from Iserlohn is in quarantine after a corona case. The Easter games of the Roosters against Straubing and Ingolstadt have been postponed. Schwenningen has also played one game less than the Panthers. They now have a double pack ahead of them. This time in their own stadium: on Thursday and Friday against Bremerhaven and Wolfsburg.
