The Augsburg Panthers and the Straubing Tigers have also confirmed their participation in a season of the German Ice Hockey League (DEL), thus increasing the pressure on the last two wobbly candidates. The Tigers confirmed on Tuesday that they had created the necessary conditions. Augsburg will also be there in the new season if the start of the season is finally decided at the shareholders’ meeting on Thursday.
“Without a doubt, the largest share of this decision was made by the players and the coaching team, who once again agreed to a substantial wage waiver,” said Augsburg’s partner Lothar Sigl. Thanks to the sponsors, “a game operation with significantly reduced costs can also be realized without any audience income,” added Augsburg’s authorized signatory Leo Conti.
In Straubing, the “monetary support from the state aid package for professional sport was a decisive factor,” said Tigers managing director Gaby Sennebogen. A positive decision has now been received.
In addition, among other things, players, coaches, employees and sponsors “played their part”, said Sennebogen. By paying their dues, the fans had “provided the necessary financial liquidity in the past weeks and months”.
The Nürnberg Ice Tigers and ERC Ingolstadt had previously agreed to participate, and the eight participants in the current MagentaSport Cup (Munich, Mannheim, Berlin, Bremerhaven, Wolfsburg, Schwenningen, Krefeld, Düsseldorf) gave the green light early on. The attitude of the Kölner Haie and the Iserlohn Roosters is still open, with Haie managing director Philipp Walter speaking to SID on Monday of a “good direction”.
The DEL is currently planning to resume league games with a delay from December 18. It is still uncertain when the clubs will be able to play in front of fans again due to the corona pandemic.
