Auer surprising winner at Lausitzring, Frijns third again

14:58 – The sixth DTM race of the 2020 season was surprisingly won by Lucas Auer. The BMW driver passed Timo Glock on the last lap, who did take second place. Robin Frijns didn’t have the right strategy, but he maximized by finishing third.

On Sunday morning, Frijns secured pole position for the fourth time in six races in 2020, ahead of brand mates Nico Müller and René Rast. The Dutchman cashed in on pole by taking the lead at the start, while Rast passed Müller for second. Behind them, Timo Glock and Marco Wittmann were the best BMWs. The men at the front did not manage to make a gap, but little changed among themselves either. Rast caught up with Frijns once and three laps later Frijns took the lead back, but he stayed there until the pit stops.

They were kicked off in the tenth lap by BMW drivers Timo Glock and Lucas Auer, who saw Jamie Green follow suit in the eleventh lap. Those early stops turned out to be a golden move. Frijns, Rast and Müller continued to ride on their old tires until at least lap 17 and after their stops came back behind Green, Glock, Auer and Loic Duval. Green had built up a nice margin towards Glock with fast laps after his pit stop, but that gap was closed relatively quickly and on lap 24 both Glock and Auer passed the British Audi driver.

A lap later, Glock briefly lost the lead to Auer, who lost the lead again to his brand mate on lap 27. In the meantime, Frijns slowly started to advance by passing Duval for P6, after which he also surprised teammate Müller for fifth position. Until the last lap it remained exciting at the front, with the first nine riders finishing in 4.2 seconds. Where Glock was in front for a long time, he had to let Auer pass in the first corner of the last lap. The Austrian from BMW thus took his first win of the season, ahead of his brand mate Glock.

The last podium place eventually went to Frijns. He started as number 5 on the last lap, but first passed Rast and took Green in the last corner. Green finished fourth, while Müller passed Rast for fifth place at the finish. Jonathan Aberdein finished seventh, followed by Duval, Wittmann and Sheldon van der Linde on P10.

The next DTM weekend will take place in two weeks at TT Circuit Assen. Then there will be races again on Saturday and Sunday.
