Audi’s new smart headlights can project animated images onto the road

As stated in press release company, each matrix headlight with a micromirror system contains 1.3 million reflective elements (each measuring only a few hundredths of a millimeter).

They can change position up to 5 thousand times per second, allowing very precise adjustment of the light beam and even projecting various images or animations onto the road or walls, for example, the model name.

Audi is set to offer five unique animated projection images of the driver’s welcome and farewell, examples of which can be seen in the video below.

The company also says that in addition to the vibrant animations, the new matrix headlights can project the so-called “light carpet” 50 meters long only inside the lane. This function is designed to protect oncoming drivers from bright headlights, which in some cases may lead to short-term blindness.

“Curved low beam lighting” will also help the driver identify other objects and people on the side of the road, the company points out. According to the resource Futurism, the use of the aforementioned headlight functions on US roads requires approval from the relevant regulator. Meanwhile, the full range of functions is already available for European buyers. Audi e-tron SUV and the electric crossover Audi e-tron Sportback 2021.
