“Audiovisual Music: Creation, Research, and Transfer” Workshop: Featuring Fernando Velázquez and Paloma Peñarrubia

After the I Conference on Cinema, Art and Culture “Gil Parrondo”, the Avilés Film Chair and the University of Oviedo organize the workshop Audiovisual music: Creation, research and transfertogether with the national R&D&I research project, “Music and Audiovisual Media in Spain: creation, mediation and negotiation of meanings, MUSMAE”, and the collaboration of the Julián Orbón Conservatory.

It will take place from this Thursday, November 9, until Saturday the 11th, at the University Services Center and the Conservatory, with free entry until capacity is reached.

Once again, the Chair brings to the city prominent names of contemporary Spanish cinematography, in colloquium talks, research and debate tables, which begin tomorrow with one of the most renowned composers of recent decades, Fernando Velazquezcreator of the soundtracks for “The Orphanage” or “The Impossible”, as well as constant collaborations in international productions.

Velázquez returns to Avilés this Thursday, the 9th, to lead a meeting with the public under the heading “Creative processes in the composition of film music”, in a talk viewed from 7:00 p.m.

On Friday the 10th, around three tables, the researchers of the MUSMAE project take their turn, whose main researcher is Celsa Alonso, full professor of Musicology at the University of Oviedo.

In the first, “Music and cinema“Julio Arce, from the Complutense University of Madrid, will participate, as well as Celsa Alonso and Diana Díaz, director of the Avilés Film Chair and the University of Oviedo.

In the second, “Music in transit“, Josep Lluis i Falcó, from the University of Barcelona, ​​and Laura Miranda and María Alonso, from the University of Oviedo, will intervene. In the third, “Music in digital media“, Eduardo Viñuela, Marta Fernández and Lorena Varela, from the University of Oviedo.

Paloma Peñarrubia

On Friday afternoon, at 7:00 p.m., the Andalusian composer Paloma Peñarrubia, nominated for the 2023 Goya for Best Song for “Un Paraíso en el Sur”, from the feature film “La Vida Chipén” by Vanesa Benítez, leads the round table “The soundtrack in the context of the film industry“. Along with her, two Asturian filmmakers, the director Celia Cervero and the producer Coral Zardaí, and the musicologist Teresa Fraile, who will be in charge of moderating the table.

And if all the previous activities will take place at the University Services Center, the Julián Orbón Municipal Conservatory hosts on Saturday morning, from 10:00 a.m., the activity that will close the workshop, a Film music composition workshop which will be taught by the professor, composer and doctor in Musicology, Sergio Lasuén, from the Lucena Professional Conservatory of Music and the International University of Andalusia.

This is a proposal aimed especially at students of Asturian conservatories and Musicology. For her, it has been possible to bring together participants not only from Julián Orbón, but also from the Superior Conservatory of Oviedo and the Professional Conservatory of Gijón. And students from other centers are expected to attend as listeners.

Research Project “Music and audiovisual media in Spain: creation, mediation and negotiation of meanings, MUSMAE”

The Contemporary Music Research Group of Spain and Latin America “Diapente XXI” (GIMCEL) of the University of Oviedo is developing several R&D&I research projects, among them “Music and Audiovisual Media in Spain: creation, mediation and negotiation of meanings (MUSMAE)”.

The members of the project present this workshop with several work sessions that will allow them to evaluate the results of their work, ongoing activities, methodological problems and possible future lines of research. At the same time, and given that transfer tasks are essential, parallel activities will be developed, open to all those interested in the role of music in audiovisual communication: the aforementioned meetings and round tables with creators and professionals, and a workshop film music composition.

This set of activities is also understood as a training event aimed at students of the Degrees and Doctorate programs in Humanities (especially the doctorate taught in the Department of Art History and Musicology), as well as the conservatories of Oviedo, Avilés and Gijón.
