The German car manufacturer Audi has announced plans for electrification a long time ago, but this does not prevent it from working on new, sporty RS models. Cars with internal combustion engines, hybrids and fully electric RS models are expected. It is in conversation with Autocar revealed Sebastian Gramm, Managing Director of Audi Sport.
He said that we can expect several RS crossovers, but did not go into the details of how many such cars are planned or what their technical characteristics will be. Also, the successor of the R8 supercar is being thought of and various possible development directions are being worked on for the successor of the R8. The Audi representative makes it clear that it must be in line with the Volkswagen Group’s overall electrification strategy. This model will have to be accepted by the entire management of the concern.
We will inevitably expect new electric RS models. Audi engineers are working to ensure that the batteries of electric models do not increase the car’s weight too much, trying to find a balance between weighting, car weight and available power. RS models in plug-in hybrid form are also expected. Grams, however, emphasizes that not all Audi models will receive RS versions. The manufacturer does not want to devalue the value of this brand.
He also stated that Audi’s entry into Formula One from 2026 does not affect the budget available for the development of street cars. As we know, Audi will officially start F1 in 2026, but the manufacturer is already creating a team that will work and start the development of the new engine that will meet the new F1 technical regulations. By 2030, all Audi RS models will be electrified, that is, either fully electric or at least hybrid. Audi is not going to build RS models with four-cylinder engines. These cars will still use larger displacement engines with more cylinders.
