We have previously reported on the rumors that the German car manufacturer Audi is considering the possibility of purchasing an electric car platform from Chinese car manufacturers in order to modernize its electric car offer. This is due to the fact that the SSP platform of the new generation electric car of the parent company Volkswagen concern will be delayed and will not be ready in time. Now concreteness has appeared in these rumors and one Chinese car manufacturer is mentioned – SAIC.
Media Autocar Audi is reportedly in talks directly with Chinese government-controlled SAIC to acquire an electric car platform from them. The Germans have seen the platform, which was put into circulation two years ago. It allows the production of rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive machines, but SAIC uses it for its own premium for the IM Motors brand. Audi plans to use it for several new models.
Although it is currently not clear exactly what Audi is going to produce using the Chinese platform, there are rumors that it could be production models of the Activesphere, Urbansphere, Skysphere, and Grandsphere concepts. Autocar available information indicates that the MEB and also the new PPE platform that Audi developed together with Porsche have been assessed as unsuitable for producing production versions of these concepts.
As can be understood from the information provided by SAIC, the IM Motors platform seen by Audi shares the main elements with another platform of the concern “Nebula”, which is used for more budget models. This platform is capable of providing both all-wheel drive and single-axle drive, but the available power ranges from 201 to 800 horsepower. For example, we can take the IM Motors L7 sedan, which is available with all-wheel drive, develops 536 horsepower and is available with a standard 93kWh battery, as well as a larger 118kWh battery for an additional fee. In the Chinese range tests, this car with the large battery is able to cover 1000 kilometers on a single charge, but it should be remembered that the Chinese tests usually show higher results than the WLTP test we are used to.
