The Paris Games Week, the big annual video game show, it’s over. On the last day, in a small room, a few people gathered for a seemingly innocuous event: a auction exclusively composed of retro consoles and games. Normal given the general theme. Sales start and quickly, prices soar. Almost nothing costs less than a few hundred euros. Some people know exactly what they want and don’t hesitate to pay the price, sometimes up to 5000 €. Everything is sold, and we are surprised at the sums reached, higher than market prices. The sale brought in a total 25 000 €. It’s a far cry from the 430,500 dollars for a Sonic on Megadrive or the 1.7 million euros for the first Mario on Nes, but it’s still very respectable. Especially since the lots have a somewhat special origin.
Dozens of consoles and video games are sold at auction, their provenance is unusual
All items sold have been previously seized by the courts during different cases. The sale is actually organized by theAgrasc, the Agency for the management and recovery of seized and confiscated assets. Charlotte Hautemanière, head of the Agrasc furniture department, explains that “if there is a conviction, then the money will go to the state budget. For confiscated property, this money can serve as a basis for compensating victims, or enable the financing of competition funds against addictive behavior, for example.”
Those are the Neo Geo which sold the best, as explained by David Kahn, Justice Commissioner in charge of the sale. “There were a lot of people who were discovering the prizes from their childhood, the games they played and saying to themselves “Ah but that’s worth the money!” Maybe I’ll look in my attic! »“. Considering the prices, it might be worth looking around.
