The auction, which opened with the tunes of We Will Rock You, was accompanied by great interest. A number of items sold for prices exceeding the experts’ estimate.
Among the artefacts auctioned for hundreds of thousands of pounds were, for example, a silver bracelet in the shape of a snake, a door from Mercury’s house full of graffiti and a jukebox from the 1940s.
A 1973 Yamaha piano that Mercury bought two years later for around £1,000, but the buyer got it for less than the estimate.
The auction house expected the sale could fetch between two and three million pounds. On the contrary, the said manuscript of the famous composition written in pencil on 15 pages of paper was auctioned several hundred thousand higher than Sotheby’s expected.
