Auckland/Tāmaki Makaurau to host FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023™ final draw in October

Fatma Samoura, FIFA Secretary General, and Grant Robertson, Deputy Prime Minister of New Zealand, today announced that Auckland/Tāmaki Makaurau will host the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023™ Draw on Saturday October 22 next.

Held at the iconic Aotea Centre, the ceremony – which promises to be spectacular and full of surprises – will unveil the squad rosters of what will be the ninth edition of the FIFA Women’s World Cup™, co-hosted by next year by Australia and New Zealand.

Televised around the world, the event will give fans a taste of local culture and the host cities – five Australians and four New Zealanders – of the competition.

Fatma Samoura, for her part, declared: “Preparations are going well in Australia as in New Zealand. Both countries will be ready to host the biggest women’s sporting event in the world. Next October’s draw will truly mark the start of the countdown to the next FIFA Women’s World Cup.

The potential and impact of this 2023 edition should inspire vocations and encourage many young girls and women to get involved in football. We can’t wait for this draw to set the stage for a competition that will do everything to push the limits of this discipline. »

As part of today’s announcement in Auckland/Tāmaki Makaurau, which was also attended by Johanna Wood (President of NZ Football, member of the OFC Executive Committee and member of the FIFA Council) as well as players and representatives, Grant Robertson, who is also the government member in charge of the competition, said it will be a great honor to host the draw in New Zealand.

The coming months promise to be exciting for fans around the world, as many teams are still in contention in the different confederations’ qualifiers. From July to October, several qualifying tournaments will be played in Africa, North and Central America, South America and Oceania.

Finally, ten teams will compete for the last three places in a play-off tournament.

About the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023™ Draw

  • The 32 teams will be divided into eight groups, thereby determining the country in which they will play their group matches.

  • Some information about the draw:

    • Some 800 people will attend the draw, including senior FIFA and confederation officials, as well as representatives from the world’s media, broadcasters, competing teams and commercial partners.

    • The drawing of lots will be carried out during a ceremony lasting approximately one hour, broadcast around the world. In addition to the raffle itself, this event will include artistic performances and cultural components symbolizing Australia, New Zealand and their host cities.

    • Around 120 team representatives will be on site and will take advantage of their presence to visit Australian and New Zealand hotels and training sites.
