In anticipation of November 30, when the Return Guarantee System will be mandatorily operational throughout the country, Auchan installed recycling machines (RVMs – reverse vending machines) in 37 stores, including 25 hypermarkets, 5 Auchan supermarkets and 7 MyAuchan convenience stores in Bucharest.
In total, the company operates over 420 stores, comprising 33 hypermarkets, 6 supermarkets and 382 MyAuchan ultra-proximity stores, of which over 370 in Petrom stations, meaning the retailer can support recycling within the SGR system in over 75 % of its large stores.
The machines have already been used since April 18, when the retailer organized a campaign through which customers received for each recycled packaging a voucher worth 0.5 lei granted on the basis of the MyCLUB Auchan loyalty card.
Thus, according to the retailer’s data, until now approximately 150,000 packages have been brought daily to the 37 collection points, the largest quantities being registered in Bucharest, Timișoara, Craiova, Constanța and Brașov.
The first million packages were collected from the second week itself, and less than 6 months after the installation of the collection machines, the number of beverage packages collected exceeded 23 million, and the action continues.
Auchan being the first retailer in Romania to introduce, in 2011, in some of its stores, RVM-type machines for the recovery of PETs.
“We all know that good management of plastic, packaging or municipal waste in general means cleaner waterways and forests, a healthier environment both for us and for future generations. This is why I am happy to be at Auchan today. I welcome the company’s investment in the packaging collection and recycling system and I appreciate the work and financial effort made,” said Mircea Fechet, Minister of the Environment, Water and Forests, during a visit to one of the company’s RVMs.
“The Government’s initiative to introduce this system is to be praised and congratulated. We have already implemented it since April and we are happy to count today more than 23 million packages collected in less than 6 months, an extraordinary result, taking into account that this amount of packaging is not found in the environment today. We congratulate and thank all customers for the responsibility they have shown in this very short time. We appreciate that other colleagues in retail are doing the same and that Romanians quickly understood the mechanism of recycling, which indicates that we are ready to implement and comply with the guarantee-return system,” said Ionuț Ardeleanu, CEO of Auchan Romania.
How to recycle PET/Aluminium/Glass packaging at Auchan
Scan the MyCLUB Auchan loyalty card at the recycling machine Insert the container through the round slot. Empty PET type containers can have a maximum capacity of 3L, and those made of glass and aluminum (cans) of a maximum of 1L.
To be accepted, containers must be EMPTY, curate and undamaged, and they can be inserted, one by one, in random order, the device automatically identifying the type of each inserted package.
After completing the transaction, the user will receive a voucher on the MyCLUB loyalty card whose total value will be calculated according to the number of recycled packaging, according to the regulation. This voucher can be found and viewed in the Auchan app.
The bonus of 0.5 lei per package in the form of a loyalty voucher is granted for a maximum of 50 packages per day, respectively 100 packages/week/loyalty card. After reaching these limits, recycling can continue without granting benefits through the MyCLUB Auchan loyalty card.
