Aubervilliers. A sleeping woman is sexually assaulted by a man

On Tuesday January 25, 2022, Karl * was summoned to the bar of the Bobigny Criminal Court (Seine-Saint-Denis). He was to answer for acts committed on July 21, 2021, in Aubervilliers. That day, at a party, he sexually assaulted Anais*, one of the guests at the party.

A banal party

Everything had however started in an innocuous way. Karl, who described himself as “very social” at the time, had thrown a party at his house. Several guests were present: friends, acquaintances and some people from his professional sphere. Anais was part of this classification.

The evening follows its course, Karl, Anais and most of the guests consume alcohol there. Nothing exceptional so far, until Anais can no longer stand the alcohol she has been drinking.

“I trusted him”

Tired and drunk, she asks Karl if she can rest at his place. “I slept at his house because I trusted him,” recalls Anais, present in court. He too is intoxicated. He agrees and lays her down in bed. He covers her with a duvet, then takes off her shorts. “It was to help her undress,” he says. Then, he caresses her body, as well as her private parts.

Still asleep, Anais wakes up seeing Karl on her. Disoriented and still under the influence of alcohol, she repeatedly asks him to stop. No. No. No. He keeps on. “It didn’t seem like a straight no to me,” he explains. He will eventually give up.

Wide awake and horrified, Anais leaves Karl’s house in the middle of the night. Welcomed by a friend just after the attack, Anais is described as being “a vegetable”, by the latter. “I don’t know what came over me that night,” Karl explains. “Since then, I’ve been sorry,” he said, apologizing to her.

For the sexual assault that committed in 2021, Karl will be sentenced to 18 months in prison with two years suspended. He is forbidden to get in touch with Anais and to go to her home. There will be no financial compensation to pay to Anais, although she has the possibility, recalls the president of the court. “I don’t want his money. I just want him to be found guilty of what he did, ”concludes Anais.
