Warner Bros. plans to sell NetherRealm Studios and TT Games, according to Windows Central documentation seen by Jez Corden (via TheGamer e Push Square). Speaking as part of a podcast, the reporter noted that the developers of Mortal Kombat e LEGO may be in difficulties, after a complicated merger that will see AT&T merge parts of its business with cable company Discovery.
It is unclear how recent these documents are and it has already been confirmed that the WB Games will remain under Warner’s mantle. There’s also no mention of who would buy the studios, although of course we always have Microsoft and Sony as options.
Corden believes movies, not games, could be to blame for Warner Bros’ decision to fire developers: “My guess is Warner Bros wasn’t happy with the movie’s performance. Mortal Kombat, [e] they weren’t happy with the performance of the latest movies from LEGO. In addition, all LEGO is licensed outside Denmark and that hurts your profits.”
However, if they are actually sold, it is not known whether NetherRealm Studios would have Mortal Kombat.
Update: WB Games contacted TheGamer website, which originally reported the news, and denied that the studios are for sale.
Remi Sklar of WB Games contacted TheGamer website in response to the rumors, saying, “I can confirm that NetherRealm Studios and TT Games will remain part of Warner Bros. Games and all are included in the Warner Media Discovery merger.”
