Attorney Rafael Narváez: “Destination of Venezuelan migrants is xenophobia and death”

Narváez indicates that there has been a lack of humanity for the receiving countries of Venezuelans

The director of the NGO Civil Rights, lawyer Rafael Narváez, accuses the national government of the social and economic deterioration that has led more than five million Venezuelans to leave the country fleeing from hunger.

He adds that there has been no response to a general crisis that is evident in the failures in the supply of drinking water, electricity and domestic gas.

“Hyperinflation devours the miserable salaries of workers and the crumbs that our elderly receive who must decide whether to buy five pills or half a kilo of bananas to avoid starvation,” he says.

When analyzing the tragedy in Güiria, Sucre state, the human rights defender describes the minister of Trinidad and Tobago as “criminal conduct” for having demonstrated against Venezuelans who try to enter the island as displaced persons or refugees.

“They are detained by Trinidad and Tobago and then deported by throwing them into the sea without any protection with the risk of loss of life, as in the recent case where 28 bodies have already appeared floating in the sea,” he says.

It warns that this type of treatment against refugees and displaced persons violates the Vienna Convention, which obliges the signatory countries to provide social protection, food and legal assistance to migrants. “We are in the presence of a weakness on the part of UNHCR, the OAS and the UN in the defense of Venezuelan migrants,” he says.

In this regard, Narváez indicates that the minister of Trinidad and Tobago should be denounced before the International Criminal Court for committing crimes against humanity, as established in Article 7 of the Rome Statute.

Likewise, it questions the receiving countries of Venezuelan migrants for the lack of humanity when Venezuela received them with open arms and allowed them to enjoy all rights. “Now we see how our brothers are mistreated and despised with xenophobia.”

The director of the NGO Civil Rights reiterates that the Venezuelan State is a systematic violator of human rights. He adds that there are reasons for the International Criminal Court to investigate the Venezuelan State for crimes against humanity. “He has no soul or mercy for suffering Venezuelans,” he says.
