Attorney General: Work is needed to improve public perception

July 13 is the first day for the new Prosecutor General Juris Stukāns. He received congratulations on his inauguration from President Egils Levits.

Stukāns presented the President with his vision for improving the work of the prosecutor’s office.

“I wish you a successful job in your new position and that you succeed in achieving the purposeful tasks set for the prosecutor’s office,” Levits wished the Attorney General.

Levits asked about various aspects of the prosecutor’s office and the prosecutor’s general’s vision of the work needed to improve the area. It was discussed how Stukāns plans to work on personnel management issues and filling the currently vacant positions of prosecutors, as well as providing training for prosecutors on specific issues. Further co-operation between the Prosecutor’s Office and the State Police was also discussed.

During the conversation, both parties also touched upon the topic of the possibilities of improving the Law on the Prosecutor’s Office.

The two sides discussed the newly established European Public Prosecutor’s Office and Latvia’s participation and responsibilities in its activities, agreeing that Latvia must be active in the work of the European Public Prosecutor’s Office and find the necessary resources.

“At the moment, the President was interested in this quality, so that the attitude towards this work would change, and, as he has already pointed out, this assessment from the public would be of better quality than what may be today, in order to improve this work as much as possible. , ”Explained Stukāns.

The President and the Prosecutor General have also talked about personnel management issues and the filling of many – currently vacant – positions of prosecutors.
