September 21 is World Alzheimer’s Day every year. This year, too, Alzheimer Nederland is paying a lot of attention to this. In Steenwijkerland, 4 representatives of Alzheimer Nederland are active, namely Kees Mol, discussion leader of the Alzheimer Trefpunt, Bianca Smit of the Dementheek Steenwijkerland, Gerda van Groeningen who works as ZorgMies and Paula Bierma, community worker at Social Work De Kop.

Together with the dementia case managers, they form the World Alzheimer’s Day (WAD) Steenwijkerland working group.

Program September 21

On Tuesday 21 September there will be a morning coffee hour in the library at Meppelerweg 47a in Steenwijk from 10:00-11:30. Jannie Dijkhuizen, dementia case manager and Kees Mol, who have been the face of the Alzheimer’s Meeting Point in Steenwijkerland for years, will also be present on this special day. The theme of the morning is ‘Ah, we all forget something sometimes, don’t we?’

Information and meeting point about dementia and memory problems

In the afternoon there is an information and meeting point about dementia and memory problems on the Markt in Steenwijk from 14:00-16:00. In the ‘Alzheimer Yellow’, the working group members will be recognizable there to start a conversation with anyone who wants to and to share information and experiences about the disease dementia. But also to gauge whether, for example, there is a need for information about dementia to informal carers, schools and organisations.

Paula Bierma: „We also tell you about the possibility of following the Dementia Friendly Together training. Many people in Steenwijkerland have already done this, we want to resume it next autumn”.

New: Alzheimer meeting point Steenwijkerland district center de Gagels

In March 2020 there was the last Alzheimer meeting point due to corona. ‘It seems that we can finally start this again in the De Gagels district center, at Voetelinkstraat 56 in Steenwijk. The time is every 2nd Tuesday of the month from 2 pm and we assume the 12 October.’ says Bianca Smit. This will also be communicated via the newspaper, Facebook and the agenda of Social Work De Kop (www.sociaalwerkdekop).

Stone Wicker Wrath

The photo shows Gerda van Groeningen, Bianca Smit and Paula Bierma, with Steenwieker Toorn in the background. And if there is one thing that is a well-known beacon for many people from Steenwijk and the surrounding area, it is this church tower. A beautiful symbol too, because people with memory problems benefit from fixed points in their lives, literally and figuratively. Familiar faces, recognizable environment and clear structure. And of course a dementia-friendly society, something that the working group in Steenwijkerland has been working on for a number of years.
