Even though 3.48 million miles would miss Earth, in terms of distance in space, it’s not really that far away.
It has been reported that NASA classifies anything that passes within 120 million miles of Earth as a Near-Earth Object (NEO).
Because of the distance they fly from, a small change in their trajectory could be fatal to Earth.
Scientists tracked these thousands to observe whether or not they were on a collision course with Earth.
Asteroid 2013 YD48 isn’t the only asteroid to approach Earth in the coming weeks.
