In his first Instagram video, David Attenborough explained that he was taking the move because “the world is in trouble.” “The continents are on fire. The glaciers are melting. Coral reefs are dying.
According to the BBC, Attenborough had more than 200,000 followers in the first hour since the account was opened, and 2.5 million on Friday morning. “Saving our planet is now a communication challenge,” said the 94-year-old new user of a social network popular among younger people.

Attenborough will be assisted in managing the account by his colleagues Jonnie Hughes and Colin Butfield, who admitted in the accompanying text to the naturalist’s introductory video that “social media is not David’s natural environment.”
Sir David Attenborough is now preparing to publish a book and documentary jointly entitled A Life On Our Planet. The film, which will be released on October 4 by the Netflix streaming platform, is intended to reflect Attenborough’s career and the decline in the environment and biodiversity he has directly witnessed.
