On 24.7.23, a traveler wanted to smuggle almost 23 kilograms of water pipe tobacco and 2,000 cigarettes from Lebanon to Germany.

The suspect caught the eye of the customs officer because he did not choose the direct route through the customs exit, but was apparently looking for an uncontrolled exit in the terminal. The customs officers followed the man, first letting him into the public area and then taking him back to the customs area for inspection. When asked, the 28-year-old traveler from Ochtrup stated that he had chosen a different exit to go directly to the car rental.

When the luggage was searched, the customs officers found 88 packages of water pipe tobacco (87 packages of 250g each and one package of 1,000g) and 2,000 cigarettes. The entire amount is intended for him and his family.

The tax damage amounts to more than 2,000 euros. The customs officers therefore initiated criminal tax proceedings against the accused and seized the goods.
