The inmate who last week stabbed fellow inmate Derek Chauvin, the former police officer convicted of killing black American George Floyd, with a knife, has been charged with attempted murder. The US Department of Justice announced this on Friday.

Prosecutors say the suspect, 52-year-old John Turscak, stabbed Chauvin 22 times with a homemade knife. The incident happened last week in the federal prison in Tucson, Arizona. The former officer is still in hospital, but is recovering, according to authorities.

Turscak is charged with four offenses, including attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon. These carry prison sentences of twenty and ten years respectively. The FBI was responsible for the investigation.

Ex-cop Chauvin is serving a 22.5-year sentence for killing Floyd and violating his constitutional rights. On May 25, 2020, white police officer Chauvin placed his knee on the neck of the unarmed Floyd for several minutes during his arrest in Minneapolis. A bystander filmed Floyd lying handcuffed on the ground and saying several times that he could not breathe. Floyd became unconscious and was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
