Attempted cyberattack: Christine Lagarde targeted by a hacker posing as Angela Merkel

Hackers managed to usurp the identity of Angela Merkel and contacted former IMF President Christine Lagarde by SMS.

Christine Lagardethe current president of the European Central Bank (ECB), was targeted by hackers who posed as the former German chancellor.

The hackers impersonated Angela Merkel and sent a message to the former IMF president. The message requests an exchange between the two women via WhatsApp instant messaging and asks Christine Lagarde communicate their authentication codes.

The former president of the IMFwho was rather on her guard, did not fall into the trap and took her precautions by calling Angela Merkel directly to make sure that she really wanted communication via this channel.

A letter from the German authorities addressed to Parliament stated that: “Hackers specifically exploit the relationship of trust between two high-ranking political figures”. An investigation is opened to understand how the number ofAngela Merkel could have been stolen by cybercriminals. As a reminder, a series of similar attacks on WhatsApp, Signal or Telegram have been identified recently.
