On Friday, 43 people tried to cross the Latvian-Belarusian border illegally
Riga, Sept. 4, LETA. On Friday, the border guards prevented 43 people from trying to cross the Latvian-Belarusian border illegally, the LETA agency found out at the State Border Guard.
Since 10 August, a total of 901 people have been deterred from crossing the state border illegally.
There are no people detained for illegally crossing the state border during the past day.
Since the introduction of the state of emergency, 25 people have not been barred from crossing the state border for humanitarian reasons, while a total of 377 third-country nationals who have crossed the state border illegally have been detained this year.
The Latvian Border Guard informs the public every day about the specific number of persons who are prohibited from crossing the Latvian-Belarusian state border. Guntis Pujāts, the head of the State Border Guard, assured LETA on Friday that the Border Guard had previously returned several groups of illegal immigrants to Belarus.
It has already been reported that the government, taking into account the number of detected cases of illegal crossing of the Latvian-Belarusian border and its rapid increase, previously decided to declare a state of emergency from August 11 to November 10 in Ludza, Kraslava, Augšdaugava counties, as well as Daugavpils.
Representatives of the government coalition have pointed out that the efforts of the Alexander Lukashenko regime in power in Belarus to force the population of third countries in Latvia, Lithuania and Poland can be assessed as manifestations of a hybrid war or a hybrid threat.
