Unknown persons tried to break into a customs warehouse in the Antwerp port area on Friday night. The Antwerp public prosecutor’s office confirms this. The suspects were able to escape. The police started an investigation.
The events took place around 4 o’clock. “A suspicious situation was noticed, which prompted the customs security team to quickly arrive on the scene,” says spokesperson Kristof Aerts of the Antwerp public prosecutor’s office. “The customs security team quickly arrived on the scene, followed by a team from the Antwerp police.”
Just then the suspected suspects drove away. “Two other vehicles remained at the scene. These were towed for further trace investigation,” says Aerts. “Further inspection revealed that a window in the warehouse had been smashed, causing the alarm to go off. No loot could be taken thanks to the quick and alert action of the police and customs. An investigation into the facts has been launched.”
The customs warehouse in question had previously been the target of drug criminals. In October 2023, the Antwerp police rapid response team caught an armed commando a few kilometers from the warehouse. The heavily armed criminals were on their way to steal back a seized shipment of cocaine. Customs was able to narrowly escape a confrontation
