An episode which, fortunately, did not cause any injuries. But which, at the same time, cannot and must not be underestimated in the slightest. Because the trademark is so evident that it leaves no doubt about the matrix. Two incendiary bottles they were launched this night, about four o’clock, around consulate of the United States of America in Florence. Investigators are trying to understand whether it is one person or two. The bombs were thrown from a side street but did not reach the building and exploded on the street. The Carabinieri intervened on site, alerted by the surveillance of the diplomatic headquarters. Investigations to trace the perpetrators are in full progress. The bottles caused blazes on the asphalt and at the moment there is no damage to property or to people.
The area is, obviously, under video surveillance and the investigations by the men in uniform would have already examined the available images. The Florence prosecutor’s office has already been informed. The US consulate in Florence is headed by a career diplomat and is located in Lungarno Vespucci. The building covers the perimeter of a block and has been protected and monitored for years, also keeping the transit of vehicles at a distance, to prevent disorder and attacks. The side overlooking the Arno river is pedestrian only. Whoever threw the incendiary bottles would have operated from a cross streetat a distance that would prevent him from hitting the building and, perhaps, even from being recognized.
It doesn’t take a genius to connect molotov and subversive movements close to the antagonistic and anarchic world. It is necessary to remember that, in April 2016, four Molotov cocktails were thrown around 5 in the morning against a Carabinieri barracks, in via Aretina, in Florence. Without forgetting that, the following year, five anarchists were arrested for the New Year’s Eve bomb planted in the Tuscan capital. In that case the bomb disposal expert Mario Vece was seriously injured, hit by the explosion of a homemade bomb left in front of a bookshop near Casapound.
The mayor of Florence, Dario Nardella spoke on the phone this morning with console Usa, Daniela Ballard to express solidarity after the throwing of incendiary bottles towards the American Consulate in the Tuscan capital. “It was a serious and unjustifiable gesture and we will ensure full collaboration with the police to identify those responsible”. The Fdi deputy also spoke on the serious attack, Giovanni Donzelli. “The throwing of Molotov cocktails towards the United States consulate, which occurred last night in Florence, is a criminal act of unprecedented gravity: violent political extremists must not have any cover. Our solidarity and close sympathy for the unspeakable gesture goes first and foremost to the American diplomatic personnel. The institutions must give a strong and immediate response against this unspeakable gesture and provide total collaboration and support to the police to identify those responsible as soon as possible. The government is already working in this direction.”
The position of the League’s MEP, Susanna Ceccardi, is also peremptory. “Firm and absolute condemnation for the very serious act against the US consulate in Florence, against which two incendiary bottles were thrown last night. I hope that the extremists responsible for this unspeakable act will be identified and punished as soon as possible. All my solidarity to Consul Daniela Ballard.”
