The Manifold journalist denounces the attempt to intimidate her by a group of people connected to an accused child sexual abuser Mariniki Alevizopoulou.
During a break in a trial of a defendant for sexual abuse of a child, which the journalist was covering, she was verbally assaulted by the defendant and two other complainants.
Then, as she complains, an unknown man photographed the mother, other relatives and defense attorneys. When a relative of his mother asked for the reason, the unknown man left the room and fled with the police officers remaining inactive.
Manifold’s full announcement:
“On Friday, March 1, 2024, Manifold journalist Mariniki Alevizopoulou was covering the trial of a defendant for the sexual abuse of his child at the Athens Mixed Jury Court.
There, he was the target of an attempted intimidation by a group of alleged sexual abusers of their children, some of whom are already on trial.
Specifically, during a break in the proceedings, the defendant, flanked by two more accused, approached the journalist and began to aggressively shout at her to get out.
Then, after the proceedings were over and while the child’s side, i.e. his mother, other relatives and the lawyers supporting the prosecution, remained in the room, an unidentified man started photographing them. Manifold’s publicist was also in the room. He was noticed by a relative of the mother, who asked him why he photographed them without their permission, but the unknown man left the room without answering.
The relative followed him, as did Manifold’s reporter, but the man sped away. The police officers who were present did not react. Despite the exhortations of the relative and the journalist to stop him, the police remained inactive and the man fled.
The Manifold team does not currently have knowledge of the identity of this man, however we are troubled by the fact that the MOD police officers did not react, while at the same time we know that two of the complainants are police officers, who were actually present that day.
We declare that no attempt at intimidation is going to deter us from our investigation into the child protection system in Greece, which has been ongoing since 2018.”
