It is an evening that remains and will remain forever in the memory. This evening of July 14, 2016, when Mohamed Lahouaiej-Bouhlel, a Tunisian living in Nice, drove into a crowd of civilians gathered on the Promenade des Anglais, driving a heavy truck.
The attack is claimed on July 16 by the terrorist organization Daesh. The trial will be held from September 5, 2022 at the Paris Court of Appeal.
86 dead and 458 injured
The attack took place around 10:30 p.m., shortly after the end of the traditional July 14 fireworks. At the wheel of a 19-tonne truck, Mohamed Lahouaiej-Bouhlel enters the Promenade des Anglais, at Magnan, forces the police barrier and goes up the south sidewalk (sea side) for 1.7 km.
The assailant was slowed down for the first time, at the Negresco hotel, by a man who tried to enter the driver’s cabin by leaning on the truck’s step. In vain.
The driver shoots several times at National Police officers, who retaliate, before definitively neutralizing the vehicle at the Palais de la Méditerranée, and shooting the driver. A total of 86 people lost their lives and 458 people were injured.
