“Attacks in an hour”: doctors told how coronavirus “eats” the lungs

The picture of pathogenic processes in human lungs during coronavirus infection is described. The details were presented by specialists from the National Laboratory for Emerging Infectious Diseases (NEIDL), together with scientists from the Center for Regenerative Medicine (CReM) and the Center for Networked Systems Biology (CNSB).

Scientists have studied the alveolar cells of the lungs in the period from one to 24 hours after infection, tracked changes in the structure of the human respiratory tract 1, 3 and 6 hours after “contact” with a COVID patient.

It turned out that when infected with coronavirus, phosphorylation occurs within an hour, that is, the pathogen provokes abnormal changes in the modification of proteins in the infected cells. Thanks to this, the virus can multiply and destroy the affected cellular areas, which leads to large-scale damage to the entire lung area. In this case, the infection uses the resources of the infected cells, which are necessary for the pathogen for rapid growth and normal functioning.
