The man who tackled Dave Chappelle during a performance earlier this month did so because of the comedian’s jokes about the LGBTQ+ community. That explains Isaiah Lee in an interview that he on the New York Post gaf.
Lee says he is bisexual and that Chappelle’s jokes touched him. “I just wanted to let him know that next time he should consider having his material read by the people it can touch,” Lee said.
A joke about homeless people that Chappelle made that night also fell foul of his attacker. Lee himself was once in that situation. “I’m a single dad and my son is five. It’s a struggle and I just wanted Dave Chappelle to know there’s nothing funny about that.”
The man says in the conversation that he broke earlier in the evening when a joke was made about pedophilia in the support act, because he was abused as a minor. He confesses in the interview that he had a fake firearm with a knife in his pocket that night, but states that he always carries it with him. Lee says he needs that, because he raps and is therefore “a bit of a star”.
Lee is being prosecuted for four minor offenses related to the Chappelle incident, but his action has bigger consequences. A former roommate at a shelter saw footage of Lee after his attack on Chappelle and recognized him as the one who stabbed him last December. Lee was charged with attempted murder in that case last week.
Chappelle criticized again for joke
Chappelle was again criticized on Sunday for jokes that critics consider transphobic. Chappelle was the opening act at a John Mulaney show and once again made fun of the transgender community there. Several visitors complained about it on social media after the show in Columbus, Ohio.
The visitors would not have been aware that there would be an opening act. Because they had to put away their phones before the performance, no images appeared online, but it rained complaints on Twitter afterwards. For example, people are angry about Chappelle’s jokes, although it is not clear exactly what he said.
