Attack on Two NYPD Officers in Times Square: Bail Amounts and Controversy Surrounding Release of Suspects

Five suspects in the attack on two NYPD officers in Times Square appeared this Friday in Manhattan Criminal Court. Although they are accused of assault, four of them could be released on bail.

These are the bails set for four of the accused:

  • Darwin Gómez Izquiel – $150,000 dollars ($50,000 cash)
  • Yorman Reverón – $250,000 ($100,000 cash)
  • Kelvin Arocha – $65,000 ($15,000 cash)
  • Yohenry Brito – $65,000 ($15,000 cash)

Wilson Juárez, 21, is the only one who, according to court documents, will remain detained.
If the bail is paid, there would be a hearing in the next 72 hours, confirmed our reporter Rolman Vergara, from Univision 41.

“We must get them out of this country immediately”

Fernando Mateo, founder and spokesperson of Bodegueros Unidos de América, disagreed with the conditional releases on bail that the suspects could receive and emphasized that they should be removed from the country.

“We must remove them immediately. They cannot come to commit crimes, steal, murder and harm anyone,” he told Univision 41.

He also warned that “criminals are taking advantage” due to the controversial law of freedom without bail, for not being able to pay it.

“They are taking advantage against the winemakers, against the taxi drivers, against all New Yorkers in general. And now against the authorities,” he said.

However, activists like Sergio Uzurin, of NYC Icewatch, complain about alleged harassment of immigrants outside shelters, such as the one in Times Square.

“We urge the public to watch the full body camera video of the officers. Let them decide for themselves. We are against it being used as an excuse to justify the mayor’s (Eric Adams) economic crisis,” he said.

How the attack on the police officers occurred, according to court documents

On January 27, near 220 West 42nd Street, two police officers ordered the defendants to West 41st Street. Finally, an officer grabbed Yohenry Brito and pushed him against a building.

Brito then attempted to escape and fought the officers while being held on the ground. He then fled the scene and was arrested on January 31.

The first four individuals arrested that night were Gómez Izquiel, Juárez, Arocha and Reverón, but it is Gómez Izquiel who is accused of allegedly grabbing one officer and kicking the other once.
Reverón allegedly grabbed, pulled and threw the two officers to the ground.
