Attack on Tenerife’s natural heritage: San Antonio dragon tree burns

This Thursday there has been an act of vandalism against the Drago de San Antonioone of the most iconic trees in the town of Icod of the Wines, in the north of Tenerife. The dragon tree, 18 meters high and more than 200 years oldhas burned because of some vandals who have set it on fire.

Thanks to the action of the emergency and security teams that have intervened after the event, such as the Local Police, the Fire Department and Civil Protection, the fire has been put out, which only affected part of the trunk of the centenary tree.

The reactions to this unfortunate event have not been long in coming and Valentine Strapsecretary of the First Vice Presidency of the Parliament of the Canary Islands, has shown his “most resounding condemnation and rejection” and has cataloged the act through his Twitter profile as a “attack” against “the natural heritageemblem of the Municipality and symbol of Canarian identity”.

Fortunately, this event has not affected the iconic ‘Drago Milenario’ of Icod, true symbol of the town, present in its coat of arms and with an approximate longevity between 600 and 700 years.
