Attack on convoy of diplomats in Pakistan leaves one dead

Peshawar. A roadside bomb hit a convoy of foreign diplomats visiting northwest Pakistan on Sunday, leaving an agent from their security team dead, police said.

A Swat district police officer stated that the diplomats were visiting the Swat Valley area at the invitation of the local chamber of commerce to showcase it as a possible tourist destination.

“The squad leading the convoy was hit by a roadside bomb,” the official explained, adding that four other police officers were injured.

Until now, no one has claimed responsibility for the attack, which was condemned by the Pakistani president, Asif Ali Zardari.

“All the ambassadors remained safe in the attack and had been moved to a safe place before their departure for Islamabad,” Deputy Inspector General of Police Mohammad Ali Gandapur told Reuters.

The nationalities of the diplomats were unclear. A spokesperson for Pakistan’s foreign ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Pakistani counterterrorism forces maintain a strong presence in the Swat Valley, which has long been a hotbed of an Islamist insurgency. The militants have intensified their attacks since late 2022, after breaking a ceasefire with the government.
