The head of the Belarusian secret service KGB, Ivan Tertel, said in a video that an armed insurrection had been prepared with the aim of overthrowing the country’s leadership. The president, his family, and senior officials should have been murdered. In addition, important buildings in the former Soviet Republic had to be occupied.
Lukashenko has repeatedly accused the opposition of planning a violent coup. During the massive protests against him, he said earlier that a revolution like the one in neighboring Ukraine had been prevented.
Following the presidential elections of August 9 last year, which are widely regarded as fraudulent, hundreds of thousands of people have regularly called for Lukashenko’s resignation and new elections. He was declared the election winner with 80.1 percent of the vote. The EU does not recognize Lukashenko as president and has imposed sanctions on the regime in Minsk, which can still count on the support of Russia.
