At least 32 civilians were killed on Friday (03.08.2024) in an attack by the Islamist group Al Shabab on a beach in Mogadishu, the capital of Somalia, police said on Saturday.
“More than 32 civilians were killed in this attack and 63 others were injured, some seriously,” police spokesman Abdifatah Adan Hasan told reporters.
Police say the attack was carried out by a suicide bomber and several gunmen on Lido beach, a popular destination for businessmen and government officials.
Unverified videos posted on social media show bloodied bodies on the beach.
“Attacking and dropping bombs to kill 32 civilians shows that these Kharijites are not only targeting government centres, soldiers and officials,” the police spokesman said, using the Somali government’s term for al-Shabab.
This jihadist group linked to Al Qaeda has been carrying out actions against the federal government of Somalia for more than 17 years and has already attacked this same beach on other occasions.
