But a pro-Moscow official responded by saying Ukrainian troops had launched the attack in an attempt to blame the Russian military.
Russia controls most but not all of Kherson region. Kyiv-appointed local governor Yaroslav Yanushevych said on national television that the death toll had risen to 10, Ukraine’s Interfax news agency reported.
But Vladimir Balance, the Russian-appointed governor of the region, said Kiev had ordered troops to attack the city.
“This is a disgusting provocation with the clear aim of blaming the Russian military,” he wrote on Telegram ReutersSunday (25/12/2022).

Yuriy Sobolevskyi, deputy chairman of the regional council, said a missile landed near a supermarket near the city’s Freedom Square.
“There are civilians there, everyone living their own life, running their own business,” he said, observing a girl selling phone SIM cards, others unloading goods from trucks and passers-by.
Reuters was unable to independently verify Kherson’s report.
Ukraine has retaken Kherson, the only regional capital held by Russia since the February 24 invasion last November. Since then, Kiev says Russian troops have shelled the city across the wide Dnipro River.
