After the death of six migrants due to shots fired by members of the Army in Chiapas, the Conference of the Mexican Episcopate, through the Episcopal Dimension of the Pastoral Care of Human Mobility, requested the State to adopt non-repetition measures to limit the presence of the Armed Forces in public order work and in matters of immigration control and review in exceptional situations.
Likewise, ensure compliance with preventive measures in the use of force, as well as carry out a serious, impartial and effective investigation into what happened in Villa Comaltitlán, last October 1st.
Yesterday, the Secretariat of National Defense (Sedena) reported that after a chase by Army elements, six migrants died and 10 more were injured.
This tragedy, assured the Episcopal Dimension, “arises not as an isolated event, but as a consequence of the militarization of immigration policy, and a greater presence of armed forces on the southern border of the country which has been a constant.”
If these events are not investigated with due diligence, “they would somehow be assisted by public power, compromising the international responsibility of the Mexican State,” he emphasized.
“In the name of the fundamental dignity of each person, it is necessary to strive to prefer solutions that are alternatives to the containment of people in an irregular migratory situation who enter the national territory and the militarization of the border,” stated the Episcopal Dimension.
