ATP Rankings: Djokovic fell despite being Wimbledon champion, Federer “disappeared” and another Argentine to the Top 100

Novak Djokovic cried champion at Wimbledon for the seventh time this Sunday, after beating Nick Kyrgios in the final. In this way, the Serbian added his twenty-first Grand Slam title, surpassing Roger Federer (20) on the list of top winners and remaining just one behind Rafael Nadal (22). However, after the update of the ATP ranking, the brand new champion woke up this Monday in seventh place, four steps below the position he occupied.

What happened? It is that by decision of the ATP, WTA and ITF, Wimbledon did not award points for the ranking because the Grand Slam decided to prohibit the participation of Russian and Belarusian tennis players due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. So, Djokovic could not add the 2000 points that would have corresponded to him for his consecration and also subtracted that same amount by not being able to defend the units that he had as champion of 2021.

Federer unranked after more than 9,000 days

Another of the surprises that the new ATP ranking brought is that Roger Federer disappeared from the rankings for the first time since September 21, 1997. Due to an injury to his right knee that has him mistreating, the Swiss has been inactive for a year and lost the last points he had left, corresponding to the 2021 Wimbledon quarterfinals.
