Rublev is progressing slowly but surely
At the top of the pyramid, nothing new. At least in the Top 5. Despite poor performances (on their scale) in Monte-Carlo, Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal remain 1st and 3rd, same for Daniil Medvedev (2nd) despite his disqualification for a positive test for coronavirus and Dominic Thiem (4th), who had missed out because of a painful knee. Despite his coronation, Stefanos Tsitsipas does not progress. But he consolidates his status as world number 5, 755 points behind the Austrian.

Tsitsipas: “The clay court season couldn’t have started better”

If the news will probably not console him for his defeat in the final on the Rock, Andrey Rublev is the only one to progress in the Top 10: he wins a place and becomes 7th player in the world to the detriment of Roger Federer (8th), who does not will resume competition in a month in Geneva. In the meantime, the Russian will perhaps have further improved his best career ranking, since he is only 170 tiny lengths behind Alexander Zverev (6th). Note that Tsitsipas and Rublev, who have the most victories in 2021 (22 and 24) are respectively 1st and 2nd in the Race (ranking since January 1), ahead of Djokovic.
Nadal drew to the bottom of his reserves, but it was not enough against the Rublev wall: The summary in video
Sinner enters the Top 20, Fognini leaves it
Among the losers of the week is of course the winner of the 2019 edition, Fabio Fognini. Despite a promising start to the tournament, the Italian paid for his irregularity by relinquishing his quarter-final title against Casper Ruud. If the reform of the ATP ranking does not make him lose “only” 500 points, he slips all the same nine ranks in the hierarchy, now displaying the number 27. He is therefore no longer one of the 20 best players in the world, which does not had not happened to him for nearly three years (week of May 14, 2018).
In the case, Fognini also cedes his status as Italian number 2 to Jannik Sinner who enters the Top 20 for the first time at 19 years and 8 months. If he only won one match last week in Monte-Carlo (beaten in the second round by Novak Djokovic), he takes advantage of the absence of Stan Wawrinka and the poor performance of Félix Auger-Aliassime to progress three places (19th). Also in this Top 20, David Goffin (12th) also reaped the fruits of his quarter-final on the Rock: he overtook Gaël Monfils, Denis Shapovalov and Pablo Carreño Busta.
Ruud offers the defending champion Fognini to get to the last four in Monte-Carlo!
Ruud and Evans regain their best ranking
If they did not weigh very heavily in the semi-finals respectively against Rublev and Tsitsipas, Casper Ruud and Daniel Evans have something to smile about on Monday. They are thus reaping the fruits of their fine career in Monte-Carlo and gaining respectively 3 and 7 places to establish themselves at their respective best ranking, ahead of Fognini elsewhere: the Norwegian is 24th and the Briton 26th. The latter, who said he was allergic to clay since the start of his career, could also take advantage of this click and the spring on ocher to reach heights unknown to him. The irony would certainly not displease him.
Feverishness and 45 unforced errors in the wind: Djoko lived a day without against Evans
Davidovich Fokina takes a step forward, Puglia regains color
The return of clay smiled on young specialists. We saw it with Casper Ruud, and this is also the case with the Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina. If he was unfortunately forced to retire against Tsitsipas for his first quarter-final in Masters 1000, his performance allowed him to discover the Top 50 (48th) and gain 10 places. Finally, a little ray of sunshine for French tennis, however in great difficulty at the moment: with his two matches won on the Rock, Lucas Pouille is getting back on his feet, gaining 14 places to point to 72nd place, just behind Gilles. Simon (71st) and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (90th) who return to service in Barcelona this week.
A victory “to the mind”, exiled on the court n ° 9: Pouille goes up the slope with humility
