This historic German contest returns for a new edition in 2022, for its organization No.106. Throughout history there have been champions such as Manuel Orantes, Guillermo Vilas, Roger Federer, and more recently, a bi-championship of Alexander Zverev. The current defender of the title is the Georgian Nikoloz Basilashvili, who will return to Bavaria as the fourth seed, looking to revalidate his crown.

The first seed is precisely Alexander Zverev, trying to recover good feelings on a surface where he usually plays very well, as he recently demonstrated in Monte Carlo, reaching the semi-finals. The Teuton won the tournament in 2017 and 2018. After Sascha, there is Casper Ruud, currently consolidated as one of the best in the world on clay, and also fixed in the Top 10 several months ago, followed by the American giant Reilly Opelka, seeking to pick up the rhythm on the surface in the face of the big events, where, for example, he defends the semifinals in Rome.

Also in the seeded batch is Chile’s Cristian Garin, who although he seemed to improve his level with a semi-final in Houston, after a poor start to the year, later fell too quickly in his debut in Belgrade. The tournament’s wildcards are Danish Holger Rune, and locals Max Rehberg and Philipp Kohlschreiber.
