ATP Masters: Sinner beats Rune and sends Djokovic into semi-finals

Jannik Sinner beat Holger Rune 6-2 5-7 6-4 on the 5th day of the ATP Masters in Turin, at the same time giving Novak Djokovic his ticket to the semi-finals.

Sinner, already assured of participating in the semi-finals, finished the group stage with three victories and in first place in the green group. Djokovic, winner earlier over Pole Hubert Hurkacz, finished in 2nd place with two successes. A defeat for Sinner against Rune would have eliminated the world No. 1 and defending champion.

Sinner (24 years old) thus became the first Italian to qualify for the semi-finals of the ATP Masters. “It was a very complicated match, I had never beaten him, I started well, but then it got complicated. Against Holger, everything started from scratch after each set,” analyzed Sinner who seemed disturbed by back pain from the 2nd set.

Djokovic, assured of finishing the year in first place in the world rankings for the eighth time in his career, can therefore still aim for a seventh coronation in the “Masters tournament”. He co-holds the record for victories (6) in the event with Roger Federer.
